Over the Kahler Asten

On Alpine Climb and Rothaarsteig from Hoheleye to Winterberg 

This hike across the ridge of the Sauerland to the Kahlen Asten starts in Winterberg’s small district Hoheleye (1). At the Wanderparkplatz there is short access path to the Rothhaarsteig which here runs parallel to the Winterberg Alpine Climb to the Kahler Asten. The hike is an easy up and down next to the main ridge of the Rothaar-Mountains all the way to Langewiese (2), through the town until we reach the church and back to the mountain ridge which we will not leave again until weg get to the observation tower on the Kahler Asten. If you wish to visit the wintersports museum in Neuastenberg (3) you have to make a detour on the paths N1 and N2 join the route again at Lenneplätze (4). The final ascent passing the Lennequelle to the observation tower (5) on the second tallest mountain in Northrhine-Westphalia is conquered quickly. In the winter time skiers leave their marks in the snow on the northern slope but in the summer time the Rothaarsteig leads across the slope downhill to the street crossing in between the Kahler Asten and Bremberg. We will hike towards Winterberg on the southern slope, leave the ski slope Poppenberg behind as well as the ski jump at the Herrloh and will finally reach the outskirts of town. Always following the marking system it is now not far anymore to the spa gardens and the railway station.

Journey to destination 
By car: approach Hoheleye via Winterberg on the B 236 / 480 to Wanderparkplatz Hoheleye.
By train/bus: take the train to Winterberg from main station including stops in Neuastenberg and Langewiese to Hoheleye (R28 - Girkhäuser Straße, next to the Wanderparkplatz). Mo –Sat  (every two hours) until 6:35 pm; Mo. - Fr. also 8:35pm, Sundays and public holidays  10:30 am, 2:30 pm, 6:30 pm. Guests who purchase the SauerlandCard may use public transportation free of charge.
