Spoilt for choice: How to choose the right equipment

Regarding good functional clothing the principle of wearing clothes which consist of different layers has often been quoted and has, in fact, stood the test. Since the weather and the level of your effort are changing continuously over the course of one day, you can only adapt in a suitable manner by putting one or more layers of clothing on or off. Lots of manufacturers have therefore divided their product line up into different layers which guarantee a continual transport of water vapor from layer to layer and to the outside. This prevents heat from accumulating as well as the loss of body heat, saves your energy reserves and prevents you from getting a cold.




 

What is functional clothing made of?

These clothes can roughly be classified into the three categories base-, mid- and shell-layer. While the base-layer is worn directly on the skin (underwear), the mid-layer can be understood as a layer in between keeping the body warm (wind-permeable sweaters, vests, jackets made of fleece or wool).
The thickness of this mid-layer should be chosen according to the level of physical activity and outdoor temperature. This order of layers is made complete by the shell-layer. Here we must differentiate between soft shells/windstopper soft shells and hard shells. While the classic hard shell is represented by windproof rain jackets and –trousers, the introduction of soft shells lead to an upgrade of the fundamental principle of layered clothing offering a broad spectre of use to the person wearing it. Soft shells (mostly jackets) can be understood as a combination of the middle and outer layer of clothing. Genuine soft shell clothing is made of soft, elastic, wind- and water-resistant material, which is not completely water-proof but is instead more comfortable to wear because moisture is transported more easily and the volume one has to carry has been reduced.  Furthermore the soft shell’s outer shell is abrasion-resistant.
