Hiking on the Way of St. James in Ausserfern to the chapels in the Tannheimer Tal
Along the old salt road, through northern Tyrol to Lake Constance, a part of the European Way of St. James leads from the Gaichtpass to the Oberjoch through the Tannheimer Tal. Starting from the mighty baroque church in the center of Tannheim (1) you can go on a pleasant hike along the Way of St. James to the numerous chapels in the valley. Tannheim’s parish church of St. Nikolaus was mentioned in 1377 for the first time and was built in its current shape in 1722 according to the ground plan of the Innsbruck cathedral. Your first destination is the neighbouring district of Berg (2). At the feet of the mighty Einstein the Way of St. James leads through the meadows to the detached “Pestkapelle” of St. Leonhard (3) at Kiezen which is visible from afar and further to the nearby Zoeblen (4). If the weather is fine it is recommended to take an exhausting but rewarding detour to the Zugspitzblick (5). On your way back you will hike on the southern side of the valley overshadowed by the high and mighty Rohnenspitze on a slight ascend to the small Höfer See (6), a true gem of a mountain lake. Afterwards you will hike down to the valley again and visit the Chapel of Lourdes in the grotto.
