The Ammergau Alps
The Ammergau Alps bet on families: under the heading of the association ‚Kinderland’ (Children’s Country) they offer accommodation, programmes and outdoor adventures that specifically meet quality standards of families’ needs. This is why this region has been named a family friendly hiking region in 2006. Unterammergau has been a participating city of ‚Kinderland’ since 2004: child friendly hotels and restaurants as well as a whole adventure-‘mountain’, the Steckenberg, will guarantee unforgettable family adventures.

Tipp 1: Adventure – not only at night A whole mountain for children – this is how dreams come true. Unterammergau has dedicated one of ‚its’ mountains to child-friendly adventures: on the Steckenberg small children can pet rabbits and small goats or enjoy themselves on the trampoline while older kids may race quads or use the toboggan-run. Children as well as adults can find the right approach to nature on guided hikes, while gathering herbs or while modelling handicrafts from natural materials. www.steckenberg.de Is there anything nicer than letting such an adventurous day end around a campfire? Instead of staying on a normal campground including caravan and garden gnomes the holiday region of the Ammergau Alps offers overnight stays in a proper style tipi camp. About 30 people can stay in the three tents including campfire facilities. Parents are also welcome to join this Indian-style adventure. www.jugendherberge.de/jh/bayern/oberammergau

Tipp 2: Living together above as well as below Mountain railways are not only fascinating for children, they are also a great aid for them when ascending the great Bavarian Alps. In no time the whole family glides up to the Kolben, Laber or the Hörnlegrat where the panoramic view of the Ammergau Alps can be enjoyed in all its glory. Easy circular routes and a lot of well equipped hiking huts guarantee a perfect family outing. The chair lift at the Kolben, Laber-Mountain Railway and the overhead railway at the Hörnle offer various discounts for children ages 6 through 15 as well as family discounts. At the chair lift there is also a bike park for kids 16 and up. And if you don’t want to climb a mountain or if the weather is not so nice you will also find various family friendly activities in the valley: How about a visit to the reptile house? Or a trip with the „Tschu-Tschu-Bahn“ (Choo-choo-train) in Oberammergau? www.kolbensesselbahn.de, www.bad-kohlgrub.de or www.laber-bergbahn.de
